Budget and testing: earn useful evidence

There is no universal impact budget

The channel figures in this hub are editorial planning ranges in USD for one focused 14–30 day exploratory test, excluding production, fees and tax. They are not official minimums, statistical guarantees or ROAS benchmarks. Very competitive or high-ticket campaigns may need much more; some low-volume campaigns cannot learn quickly at any practical budget.

Plan from the outcome backwards

Expected CPA = CPC ÷ qualified conversion rate. Test budget = expected CPA × desired qualified outcomes. At $3 CPC and 3% conversion, CPA is $100; 20 expected outcomes need about $2,000 media spend. This is a forecast, not a confidence calculation. A small count supports directional learning only.

Set the risk boundary

Choose a loss cap you can absorb, target CPA, primary outcome, conversion-delay window and decision date before launch. Reserve room for one creative or landing-page revision. Do not spread $500 across ten platforms and expect comparable purchase evidence.

Write a test brief

Hypothesis: a demonstration attracts more qualified buyers than a generic product photo. Control: existing photo. Variant: demo. Hold offer, audience, objective and landing page steady. Primary metric: mature qualified CPA. Guardrails: spend, lead quality and tracking integrity.

Use controlled experiments

Use platform split-test or experiment tools when available. Avoid overlapping audiences and changing multiple variables. Algorithmically distributed ad results can identify a promising candidate, but uneven exposure is not a randomized A/B test.

Sample size and time

Estimate needed samples from baseline rate, minimum detectable improvement and uncertainty tolerance. Twenty conversions is not automatically a significant result. Include weekday/weekend variation and wait for the normal sales lag. Rare or long-cycle outcomes may require proxy learning plus later revenue confirmation.

Suggested sequence

Before launch: QA and unit economics. Early delivery: inspect tracking, geography and traffic quality. First week: repair obvious mismatches without constant restructuring. At the planned checkpoint: review mature outcomes and uncertainty. Expand only when the evidence and cash-flow capacity support it.

Document the result

Record dates, spend, settings, creative, conversions, qualification, revenue lag and decision. Save inconclusive tests as inconclusive. A short-term winning ad can still lose when the audience is exhausted or costs rise.
