What is AEO? A practical guide to being useful in AI answers

Understand answer engine optimization, prepare your content for discovery, and measure AI visibility without confusing a citation with a customer.

The useful starting point

Make your expertise accessible, specific, and verifiable. Observe where AI systems cite it, but judge success through useful audience and business outcomes.

AEO describes a goal, not one universal formula

Answer engine optimization, usually shortened to AEO, describes work intended to make information discoverable and useful in answers produced by search and AI systems. You may also hear generative engine optimization, or GEO. People use these labels differently; there is no universal certification, score, or single ranking recipe behind them.

SEO concerns visibility through search. AEO brings particular attention to situations where the answer is assembled before someone visits a website. The overlap is substantial. Google’s generative AI optimization guide says its established SEO practices remain relevant to AI search.

Your practical question is not “How do I trick a chatbot into mentioning me?” It is “What trustworthy information do we provide that helps this audience make a decision, and can the systems they use access it?” That question also improves your website for people arriving through ordinary search, social posts, referrals, and email.

Begin with five questions customers actually ask

Collect questions from support conversations, sales calls, site searches, or direct interviews. Choose five that connect to your actual offering. A local art teacher might hear: “Can a complete beginner join?”, “What supplies do I need?”, “Are there evening classes?”, “Can I book a private group?”, and “What happens if I miss a session?”

For each question, identify the audience, decision, necessary evidence, and best destination. Some answers belong on your service page. Others need a detailed guide. Do not create a thin standalone article for every wording variation.

Separate questions you can answer authoritatively from ones that require outside expertise. Your own refund policy is a primary fact you control. A claim that your class improves a medical condition requires appropriate evidence and expertise. A confident tone cannot substitute for either.

Make the answer clear enough to verify

State the direct answer early, then explain the conditions. If beginners can join, explain whether the course assumes prior skills, how teaching is adapted, and which materials are included. Readers should not need to infer the answer from a decorative slogan.

Use descriptive headings, readable paragraphs, and tables when they help compare choices. Define unfamiliar terms. Keep dates, locations, prices, eligibility, and limitations together with the claim they qualify. A clear answer can still be detailed; there is no magic sentence length that earns a citation.

Add evidence you own: an original demonstration, a process explanation, measured results with a method, or a real example shared with permission. Label hypothetical examples. Explain when a result is unusual. Provide an accessible text explanation alongside important diagrams or videos so the information is useful in more than one format.

Check access and understand the controls

Start with crawlable public pages, working links, stable URLs, and readable content. Google’s AI-features documentation states that supporting pages must be indexed and eligible for a search snippet. Eligibility does not ensure inclusion.

Also review the current Search generative AI control in Search Console. Google documents an included default, with inheritance possible for child properties. Check the actual property settings rather than assuming a setting elsewhere applies.

Different platforms have different controls. OpenAI’s crawler documentation distinguishes OAI-SearchBot, used for search, from GPTBot, associated with possible training use. These settings are independent. Decide what access fits your publishing policy; changing a training preference is not the same as configuring search discovery.

Never expose private customer records or internal documents to pursue visibility. A public explanation can be useful without making the underlying private data public.

Avoid expensive rituals without a demonstrated purpose

Google’s current guidance on AI optimization says special AI files and special schema are not required for Google Search. It specifically says that Google Search ignores llms.txt. Such a file can be an optional aid for a service that actually uses it; it is not an established universal ranking requirement.

Use appropriate structured data for the real content on your page, but do not confuse valid markup with a guaranteed recommendation. Improve inaccurate product details before adding another speculative metadata layer.

Likewise, publishing hundreds of near-identical answers creates maintenance work and can undermine usefulness. Start with the questions that matter, the evidence you can support, and the pages you can keep accurate. An honest comparison with clear tradeoffs gives people more to evaluate than an unsubstantiated “best in the industry” claim.

Keep a small, repeatable AI-answer observation log

Manual observation can reveal mistakes and content gaps, provided you treat it as a sample. Create a fixed set of realistic prompts: an introductory question, a comparison, a local or industry-specific request, and a purchase-related question. Include an unbranded version; a prompt that names your business already is a different test.

RecordWhy it matters
Date, platform, and visible model or modeOutputs and retrieval behavior change.
Exact prompt and relevant persona or locationA beginner and a procurement manager may receive different answers.
Session conditionsSign-in, prior conversation, and personalization can influence the observation.
Answer and linked sourcesA brand mention and a clickable citation are different observations.
Accuracy and next actionIdentify outdated facts or a missing public explanation.

Save permitted screenshots or a dated note with the evidence. Repeat a modest sample periodically using similar conditions. Do not enter private client details. If you appear in three of ten observations, report that exact sample. It does not mean you own thirty percent of the market or that thirty percent of real users see you.

Measure visibility, visits, and outcomes separately

As checked in October 2026, Google’s Generative AI performance report documentation describes impressions from AI Overviews and AI Mode. It says the rollout reached websites worldwide on August 31, 2026, and that a report may be absent when a site lacks enough impressions. This is visibility data within defined Google features, not a count of people who became customers or every AI mention across the internet.

Check AI-origin visits in your analytics using the source and campaign information available. OpenAI’s publisher FAQ describes ChatGPT referral tagging. Referral data can help you evaluate visits, but it cannot reconstruct all conversations where someone encountered your name without clicking.

Connect measurable visits to meaningful actions: reading a relevant guide, subscribing, making a qualified inquiry, or purchasing. Add an optional “How did you hear about us?” question when appropriate. Keep self-reported discovery separate from tracked attribution. Together they provide context; neither provides a complete map of a person’s decision.

Your first two weeks of AEO work

  1. Choose the audience and questions. Write five real questions and choose the pages best suited to answer them.
  2. Improve one important page. Add the direct answer, evidence, author or business context, limitations, and a clear next step.
  3. Inspect access. Review indexing, crawler settings, public content, and the relevant platform controls.
  4. Record a baseline. Save a small prompt sample and available search or referral data with dates.
  5. Review usefulness. Ask an intended reader whether the page answered the question. Fix confusion before expanding the content library.

Use the Evidence Center to review supported Search Console and acquisition CSV exports. Keep your manual AI-answer log separately; this workspace does not automatically monitor AI answers. Your aim is to become easier to discover and more useful when found. Citations are a possible sign of progress, not a promised reward for following a checklist.
