Start here

Look for relevant customer questions already associated with your pages, then inspect the page and the search intent. Use the data to choose an investigation or improvement. A query with impressions is evidence of visibility, not proof that a new page will rank or convert.

Choose a comparable view

Start with a date range long enough to make the report useful for your traffic level. Record the search type, country, device, and any query or page filters. Compare equivalent periods and consider seasonality. A short burst on a low-traffic page can be interesting, but it should not decide the whole content plan.

Search Console’s Performance report includes clicks, impressions, CTR, and average position, with views grouped by queries or pages. Average position describes the topmost result for the relevant grouping; it is not a universal fixed rank. Read the metric definitions.

Separate four opportunity patterns

Observed patternQuestion to investigatePossible action
Relevant impressions, few clicksDoes the result and page match the customer’s task?Review intent, title, and page usefulness.
Relevant visits, weak next-step completionIs the offer, next step, or measurement unclear?Check the journey and conversion data.
An unexpected relevant questionCan an existing page answer it well?Add a substantial section or a distinct resource.
Several URLs around one topicDo the pages serve different needs?Review page roles before considering consolidation.

These are investigation patterns, not automatic diagnoses. Several URLs showing for related queries do not by themselves prove harmful competition between your own pages.

Build a small query-to-page map

For each shortlisted question, record the current page, the reader’s intended task, the content already available, the missing explanation, and the next useful action. Group phrases that represent the same task. Avoid creating a separate page for every wording variation.

Illustrative example: “estimate follow up template” and “how to follow up on a quote” may fit one substantial guide. “quote follow up software” may need a product or comparison page because the visitor is evaluating a tool. Inspect the actual results and your customer context before deciding.

Add external research only where it helps

Use customer conversations and a current search-results review to understand the words in the export. If you need more ideas, Google Keyword Planner can suggest related keywords and provide search estimates. It is designed for advertising research, so paid competition and cost estimates should not be presented as organic ranking difficulty. See Keyword Planner’s scope.

Keep source labels on every metric. An AI-generated phrase is a suggestion. A third-party volume figure is an estimate. Your own recorded clicks are a different type of evidence.

Choose one improvement and keep the baseline

Prioritize the question that fits your buyer, has credible evidence, and can be answered well with the resources you have. Document whether you are updating, creating, or simply observing. Capture the existing page before making the change.

At review time, compare the same view and examine qualified visitor actions separately. If the query list changed, say so. If there are too few observations, keep collecting evidence instead of declaring success or failure. The output should be a useful page decision, not a spreadsheet that grows indefinitely.

Sources and editorial approach

Put the idea to work
